Update: Drupal 5.9 has been released to correct a vulnerability that was inadvertantly left in Drupal 5.8.
Drupal say that upgrading your existing Drupal 5 and 6 sites is strongly recommended. There are now new features in these releases, and Drupal fixed some notable performance issues too.
